The Unrealistic Ruler of Motherhood

As a mother, it’s easy to feel like we’re failing at our most important job. But all too often, we measure our success with an unrealistic ruler- that of societal expectations and carefully curated social media posts. When we compare ourselves to others, we will never feel in control of our lives or successes.

Social Media: A Love/Hate Relationship

Social media can be a source of support, connection, and enjoyment for mothers, but it can also be a breeding ground for self-doubt, anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. We are bombarded with perfect, aspirational images that leave us questioning whether we’re doing everything wrong.

Defining Success on Your Own Terms

The thing is, being a good parent is subjective. We all have different factors that go into our personal definition of what being a good parent means. It’s important to define it in your own terms, and not let anyone else’s expectations or preconceptions determine your success.

Take some time to assess and reflect on your family values. These values will guide you in your daily routines, decisions, and interactions as a family. Your values may focus on safety, creativity, kindness, responsibility, and respect for others, and it’s essential to recognize that these values are unique to your family alone. When making decisions, always consider if these decisions align with your set of values.

Using Social Media Positively

While social media can be a mixed bag, there are ways to use it positively. It’s important to curate your social media feeds and unfollow any accounts or people who don’t make you feel good about yourself. You can use social media to connect with other mothers going through similar challenges. It can also be a source of information, from reliable sources, about parenting-related topics you’re interested in.

You’re Not Alone

Remember that you’re not alone on this motherhood journey. It’s okay to ask for help when you need it and prioritize your mental health.

Don’t measure yourself with someone else’s ruler. Define your own definition of success and use social media positively. Recognize that every family is unique, and don’t let anyone else’s expectations or preconceptions determine your success. You got this!
